Bee Information
Bees are an important part of the ecosystem and have a strong influence in San Diego county. Bees are responsible for pollinating nearly 75% of our flowering plants, most of which are crops. In addition to flower pollination, bees also help to pollinate the farms and citrus groves in southern California.
We understand the importance of the local bee population and offer live bee hive removal whenever possible. Honey bees are social insects and live as a colony in bee hives. Bees often construct nests in trees, but when the colony gets too large or has a failing queen, bees will begin to swarm to find a new location. Bees usually only swarm once a year, although Africanized honey bees can swarm more frequently.
Bees Within Structures
Honey bees often construct nests in trees, however, there are times when bees become a structural pest and invade homes, attics, wall voids, roofs and even motor homes. Bees can temporarily cluster onto a structure when they are looking for a new location and will typically move within 24-48 hours. If your bees have been present for longer than 48 hours, bee control is necessary, especially when the bees present a danger to people, animals or businesses. We’ll inspect and open up the infested area to allow for full hive removal. After the hive has been removed, our state licensed, in-house construction team is prepared to handle all repairs needed to restore your home to its former beauty.
Temporary vs. Permanent Swarms
European Honey Bees swarm roughly once every year. They tend to swarm when they colony is becoming too large and a new location is needed. Sometimes bees will form a temporary cluster while they are in transit to selecting a new hive location. This cluster is usually temporary and the bees will move on to a new location within 1-2 days. If the bees haven’t moved on within that time frame or are starting to establish themselves permanently and going in and out of wall voids or attic eaves, please give us a call and we will go over your bee control options with you.
Humane Live Bee Hive Removal
Want bees off your property but don’t want to hurt the colony? We specialize in live bee hive removal in southern California. Live hive removal is a time consuming process which typically involves cutting into the wall or roof to remove the hive. After the hive and honeycomb has been removed, we transport the bees using a decoy queen. Decoy queens must be used to successfully relocate the bee colony. The utilization of decoy queens is beyond the ability of most pest control companies who generally rely on more traditional kill-only methods. In the event we cannot relocate the hive due to the queen’s death, damage or inability to be removed, the rest of the hive will likely wane in 3-5 days after treatment.
Residential Bee Pest Control
Bee removal service begins with a licensed technician providing a full inspection of your home. During the inspection, the source of the nest will be identified, as well as potential bee harborages and entry points. After the bee hive has been located, our construction team will open up the wall or roof void to gain access to the colony and honeycomb. Depending on accessibility, we may be able to safely relocate the bees away from the structure.
Honeycomb & Nest Removal
After eliminating the bees within the structure, the hive and honeycomb must be removed. Bees are attracted to pheromones within the hive and honeycomb remnants left in the walls and will return to the same location if the hive is not removed. Additionally, the stored honey in the honeycomb attracts other pests or can melt, staining and discoloring your walls.
Our team will remove all of the hive, wax and leftover honeycomb. After removal, the area will receive a treatment which neutralizes the pheromones bees are drawn to. When the treated area has been cleared, our technicians will repair the damaged area and seal off any bee entry points - eliminating any chance of re-infestation. If you provide the paint, we’ll even paint the repaired location to match!
